PURPOSE
The ELPRO 805U radio modems may be used to extend a Profibus Network. The
Profibus network must be configured to account for the increased delays in data
transmission caused by the radio modems. Also, the profibus network must be connected
to the modem correctly to ensure operation of the network. This document describes the
configuration required.
Baud Rate Selection
The ELPRO Modems support the following baud rates in common with the Profibus
standard. 19200 Baud, 93750 Baud. One of these rates must be used for the system to
operate successfully. For maximum reliability, use 19200 baud for both the Profibus
network and the serial port on the radio, and set the radio rate to 19200 baud. For
maximum speed, select 93750 baud for the Profibus network, and select 76,800 baud
radio rate for 805U modems. The 93750 baud option for the radio modems may not be
available from the configuration software. In this case, use a terminal package to set the
baud rate to 93750 baud. The command to select 93750 baud is ATC13. Once this
command is entered, the modem will change baud rate, so issue the command
“ATC13&W” to write the configuration to non-volatile memory. To communicate with
the modem again, Set DIP switch 2 on, and reset the modem.
Connection
The ELPRO Modems have two terminals marked “A” and “B” for connection to RS-485
networks. Profibus uses RS-485 standard for it’s physical layer network. The two RS-485
lines are labelled “A” and “B” in Profibus networks, however the usage is opposite to the
normally accepted RS-485 usage. This means you must connect Profibus “A” to
ELPRO “B” and Profibus “B” to ELPRO “A” for correct operation.
